What You Should Do Following a Car Accident

Upset driver After Traffic Accident

Millions of accidents occur every year all over the world. Fortunately, most of these accidents only involve damages to the car, and not the occupants. However, studies have shown that out of every three accidents, one often results in personal injury to the driver or the passengers. Two out of every ten accidents often result in fatal injuries. In order to protect yourself and your interests after an accident, it is important that you do the following things.

Ensure that everyone is fine, then move to safety

Following any accident, safety should be prioritized before anything else. Ensure that everyone is fine. Check with all the occupants of the vehicle. If someone has been hurt, call 911 without hesitation. Call emergency 911 if any occupant of the vehicle looks groggy or unresponsive. You should then all move to the side of the road. If the accident was minor, you could move it to the side of the road as well. However, if there were serious injuries and damages to the car, just leave it there until the police arrive. Turn on the hazard light, position the reflective triangles and flares so as to increase visibility of the accident by the oncoming vehicles.

Call the police and then file a report

After ensuring the safety of your passengers, you should call the police regardless of how big or small the accident is. As the police come to the accident scene, you should prepare your driver’s license, vehicle registration card and your current address. Once the police arrive you will fill the accident report providing details on the location, extent and nature of the accident. You will also be required to indicate if there were any injuries and their extent as well. Request for a copy of the report from the police as this will help you in the event that you get into a dispute with the other driver as to who should carry the blame.

Get the other driver’s information

As you wait for the police to arrive, get the insurance and personal information of the other driver. Some of the details that you should take down include his or her name, address, and phone number, model of car, license plate and insurance policy number. While doing this, you should be very careful about your personal information. Do not give out your social security number and do not sign any document at the scene.

Take photos of the damage

Take several photos of the scene, the damage on both vehicles, any injuries and any other important information worth noting. You can use your mobile phone for these, but it’s advisable that you back information using a camera. This is because you can easily lose your phone. Also vividly describe how the accident occurred in your notes.
